My name is Erin, and I graduated this past May from Loyola Marymount University with a B.S. in Biochemistry and a minor in Peace Studies. Although most of my degree focused on biochemistry, I've decided to take some time to focus on the peace and social justice of what I learned at LMU.
LMU provided me with wonderful service opportunities in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and several regions of Mexico. After spending time in many communities, orphanages, and building homes, I knew that there was more of myself that I could give.
On December 1st, 2013, I submitted my Peace Corps application. Exactly 8 months later on August 1st, 2014, I received my invitation. In June 2015 I will be off on a 27 month adventure to teach English in Madagascar.
I feel so blessed to have this once in a lifetime opportunity to live somewhere I've only dreamt about and most importantly to follow God's call to serve others. I know I will be faced with many challenges, but hopefully they will be overshadowed by moments of joy. I am so excited to immerse myself in a new culture, learn a new language, and grow in my Catholic faith.
Below is one of my favorite quotes from Pope Francis. This quote is from his Holy Thursday homily in 2013, which also happens to be one of my favorite days in the Catholic calendar!
Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us.
This is what I do. And I do it with my heart.-Pope Francis
